One major asset of the region: its beautiful beaches near the B&B La Rochelle Les Dimeries

It is one of the reasons why you should come and visit our lovely region. It features large and wonderful fine sand beaches. Here is the list of the most appreciated beaches, but there are many more to discover.

Beaches on the Ile d’Oléron

Beach of Saumonards : it is known as the most beautiful beach of the island. It is surrounded by a forest as well as wild dune. The view over La Rochelle, Ile d’Aix, Ile de Ré and Fort Boyard nearby is astonishing. It is quite steep so you soon get deep into the ocean.

Beach of La Boirie (Saint Denis d’Oléron) is not as wild. Very close to the village, it makes it ideal for families. The children can play very safely and the colourful beach huts are very charming.

Beach of Huttes (also in Saint Denis) is much wilder. Facing the ocean, it means that it’s not sheltered from the wind. This is certainly why it’s the surfers’ favourite beach.

Beach of Gatseau: with its gentle slop down to the sea, it’s the only south oriented beach on the island. It is therefore sheltered from the wind. The maritime pine trees of Saint Trojan Les Bains border the beach and enable you the rest in the shade.

Beaches on the continent

Beach Pointe Espagnole : at the end of the peninsula of Arvert, not far from Ronce-les Bains, it’s a breathtaking view over the south of the Ile d’Oléron. It feels so close, you would think that you can almost touch it. Careful though, because of the “baïnes” (strong currents), this beach is dangerous and unsupervised. Swimming is not permitted.

Beaches of Bonne Anse: located all along the Bay of the same name, they all are astonishing. To discover them, the seaside resort La Palmyre offers all types of accommodation.

Beach of the Nonnes: in Meschers sur Gironde, south of the department, it’s a beach bordered by cliffs, which is very rare around here. With also its view over the other side of the Gironde, it makes it very special.

Chatelaillon beach: 3 km long beach, it is bordered by a street with renovated “Belle epoque” style houses. It’s a lovely walk and if you fancy a swim, make sure to check the tide schedule as it’s only possible during high tide.

Ile de Ré

Beach of La Conche : in Saint Clément des Baleines, it is, according to the “Rétais”, the most beautiful beach of the island. Facing the ocean, this wild beach gives a feeling a vastness. It offers a breathtaking view over both lighthouses the Baleines and the Baleineaux. With its gentle slop, it’s ideal to bask in the sun or go for a swim.

Beach of Petit Bec: near the Lizay state-forest, you will also enjoy the same view over both lighthouses. It’s a 3km long beach with dunes. Surfers can be seen on windy days.

Beach of Gollandières: it is part of the 6km beaches of Le Bois Plage. It has a direct access through a wooden walkway to preserve the dune. But it’s right in the middle of many other beaches you can choose from such as Grenettes, Gros-Jonb, Pas des Boeufs, etc… The very gentle slop of these kilometres of sandy beach provides lovely walk by the sea.
